Nestled in one of the back streets, behind Kensington High Street, Maggie Jones’s has been serving rustic, comfort food for over 40 years!
Their classic, British menu includes dishes such as Roast Pork Belly, Wild Boar Sausages, Grilled Salmon, and of course their famous home-made Pies. It seemed a shame not to experience this charming little eatery during ‘British Pie Week’.
The quirky interior features dried hops tumbling from hanging wicker baskets, candlewax dripping down bottles of champagne and intimate wooden dining booths. For a moment you forget you are located in the swanky, upscale area of London’s Kensington, immediately transported to a cosy farmhouse in the heart of the English countryside.
What we ate:
Globe Artichoke with Hollandaise – Pretty special presentation and utterly yum!
Smoked Salmon & Crab Parcel – The crab meat had the most incredible flavour, really punchy with a touch of tabasco.
Vegetable Pot Pie with Boiled Egg and Herb Mash – Definitely the best pie crust I have ever seen (and I’ve seen a few), golden pastry that melted in the mouth. The consistency is quite ‘soupy’ (watch yourself because it is like molten lava when served), but the flavour was unreal! Considering how wet the filling is, the pastry held its own and was still crispy. Highly recommend opting for the addition of the boiled egg, us Brits love a bloody boiled egg!
Us English folk are pretty particular when it comes to Pie & Mash, Fish & Chips and of course, a good ol Cuppa Tea! All of which are institutional British classics, and just like our precious ‘British Brew’, everybody has their own opinions and preferences when it comes to Mash Potato. The Mash for me, was the best part of the meal, buttery, smooth, not a lump in sight. Winner!
Each of Maggie Jones’s hearty, classic dishes are served on mismatched vintage crockery, presented in way that showcases the best of traditional home cooking. The cosy furnishings and candlelight make it perfect for ‘date night’. However, we visited at lunchtime and found it to be a popular spot for a business lunch. The staff are welcoming, friendly and clearly passionate about the menu, adding to the homely atmosphere.
Located in Kensington, the menu prices are standard. The set lunch menu offers two courses for £19.00 and three for £23.00. The portion sizes are extremely generous, and the pie is pretty bloomin great! If you are looking for a ‘Pukka Pie’ (not the microwaveable type), head down to Maggie Jones’s, you won’t be disappointed!
